Eat & Speak: A Food Tasting Event Showcase
Organizing Eat & Speak reminded me exactly why I chose to create Discover Her Essence in the first place. Exploring myself and the things that I love through my blog allows me to just flourish freely and be exactly who I am. After my Toy-Drive Event back in April, I realized that apart from writing I truly have another passion. And that is bringing people together. Producing this event with the cook Alissa Warren was so much fun! Everything tied together almost perfectly for me and for her, and our chemistry lit the flame that is Eat & Speak!
Working as a reservationist at Jean-Georges restaurant these past 2 years I wouldn’t consider myself a ‘foodie’…. just yet LoL, but the experience has definitely opene my eyes to art of food creation, prep and presentation. Something I am most definitely fascinated in. Growing up as a very picky eater, I am now proud to say that I'm willing to try many different dishes. So when aspiring chef/very old friend of mine Alissa Warren mentioned on social media one day that she wanted to showcase her fork, I couldn’t help but suggest that we should collaborate! I’m all about women pursuing the very depths of what makes them whole, and if I can help in any way I most definitely want to do that. Especially for my sisters.
So here we go. I reach out, Alissa agreed to collaborate and now we have an event coming up. It was just that simple. I leave Alissa in charge of doing what she does best. She created the full menu, each and every item down to the names were fully thought out by her. Alissa also created the drink menu, which included traditional mojitos, margaritas & etc' with her signature take on them. In preparation for this event, I made somewhat of a casting call for any and every artist who wanted to show case their talent at our food tasting event. My performers pulled through and they were so powerful!!!! I was blown away by each and every performance. We had comedy, poetry, spoken-word, song, rap, & dance.
All of which were outstanding. It was great to see the courage that many of my performers had when standing up in front of so many people to showcase their talents. I was so thankful that they agreed to be apart of Eat & Speak. It turned out to be everything that we hoped it would. Alissa & I wanted to merge both of our crafts together by putting together this event. My love for the arts is what inspired me to want to organize a show, and her love for cooking is what made her want to launch her food catering business "The Black Fork". The turn-out for Eat & Speak was amazing and the overall success of this event made me proud to be friends with such an amazing cook! Stay tuned for our next collaborative event: Food, Booze & Blues - February 10th ;)
